Gastric Sleeve Surgery in Mexico is one option people may consider when seeking surgical treatment for obesity. Also called sleeve gastrectomy, it removes most of the stomach, leaving a narrow tube that holds less food. The procedure can support weight loss and may improve some health problems related to excess weight, but it requires long-term follow-up and changes to eating habits. Review the procedure, expected results, recovery, risks and the details of any written quote with qualified health professionals before making a decision.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery hospitals, clinics and surgeons

How it works

A gastric sleeve, or sleeve gastrectomy, is an operation that removes about 75% to 80% of the stomach. The remaining portion is shaped into a narrow tube or sleeve. Because the smaller stomach holds less food, patients generally feel full after eating less. The operation may also reduce production of ghrelin, a hormone involved in appetite. Unlike gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy does not reroute or bypass the intestines. It is commonly performed laparoscopically, using a camera and instruments inserted through small abdominal incisions; robotic surgery may also be used. The removed portion of the stomach is not put back.

Who it is for

Common criteria for considering bariatric surgery include a BMI of 40 or higher, or a BMI of 35 to 39.9 with a serious weight-related health problem such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or severe sleep apnea. Some people with a BMI of 30 to 34 and serious weight-related health problems may qualify for certain weight-loss surgeries. Candidates have generally tried diet and exercise changes without sufficient weight loss. A clinical assessment is needed: suitability can also depend on overall health, ability to undergo anesthesia and other individual factors. The criteria are not a guarantee of eligibility, and a bariatric team can explain which options fit a patient’s circumstances.

Preparing for the procedure

Before surgery, the team typically reviews your medical history, weight-related conditions, medications, and readiness for long-term dietary changes. Evaluation may include blood tests and other assessments, such as heart or sleep testing, based on your health and the surgeon’s plan. Ask which results and records you need to bring from your home clinicians.

Many programs use a preoperative diet or liquid phase, but its length and requirements vary. Follow the instructions you receive; do not start or change a restrictive diet on your own. Ask the surgeon and prescribing clinician which medicines or supplements to pause or adjust, especially diabetes medicines, blood thinners, and medicines that affect weight.

Bring identification and medical records, a current medication list, comfortable clothing, and any items the center recommends. Confirm who will help you after discharge, how to reach the care team, and what arrangements are needed if you have a complication after returning home.

Expected results

Weight loss varies from person to person. Cleveland Clinic’s bariatric guide says many sleeve patients lose 55% to 65% of their excess body weight within 12 months; some long-term data cited in that guide indicates that most maintain more than 50% excess weight loss after five years. StatPearls reports average excess weight loss of around 60% at five years. These figures refer to excess weight, not the same percentage of a person’s starting body weight. A separate Cleveland Clinic article says people commonly lose about one-third of their total body weight within eight to 12 months after bariatric surgery. Individual results depend on factors including starting weight and continued eating, activity and follow-up habits.

Recovery and results timeline

  1. Procedure dayA surgeon removes a portion of the stomach and forms a narrower stomach pouch. The operation is generally performed laparoscopically, but the approach depends on the patient and surgical plan.
  2. Early postoperative periodThe care team monitors recovery, pain, fluid intake, and ability to move safely. You will receive instructions about medicines, wound care, activity, and warning signs.
  3. First weeksDiet typically progresses through staged textures under the program’s guidance. Energy and activity may improve gradually, but recovery differs between patients.
  4. Following monthsWeight and health changes vary. Follow-up helps assess nutrition, hydration, symptoms, activity, and any conditions affected by weight.
  5. Around the first yearContinue scheduled clinical reviews and recommended blood tests. Your team can assess progress and address reflux, food tolerance, or other concerns.
  6. 12–24 months and beyondWeight change and maintenance differ by person. Long-term follow-up, nutrition guidance, and any recommended supplements remain important.

Recovery

Recovery time differs by patient and surgical team. A Cleveland Clinic article reports that patients commonly stay in hospital for one or two nights after bariatric surgery and that returning to normal life often takes about two or three weeks. These are general figures, not a personal timetable. Your surgeon should give you instructions about eating and drinking, medicines, wound care, activity and follow-up appointments. Ask the care team when you may resume specific activities and whether any symptoms need urgent attention. If you are travelling for surgery, arrange your return journey only after discussing recovery and travel timing with the surgeon who knows your case.

Diet stages after the procedure

StageTypical timingWhat it involves
Clear liquidsImmediately after surgery, when approvedMany programs begin with small, frequent sips of approved clear liquids. Follow your team's instructions and stop if you develop concerning symptoms.
Full liquidsAfter the initial liquid stage; timing varies by programThe plan may add protein-containing liquids and other smooth foods. Sip slowly and prioritize hydration and protein as advised.
Pureed or very soft foodsAfter liquids, when your surgical team approvesFoods are introduced in a smooth or soft texture, in small portions. Chew carefully and follow guidance on foods to avoid.
Soft foods, then a longer-term eating patternProgression and duration vary by programFoods are gradually expanded as tolerated. Long-term guidance commonly emphasizes small meals, protein, hydration, and avoiding foods or drinks that cause symptoms.

Timing differs between programs. Follow the written diet plan from your surgical team.

Risks and complications

Possible complications include bleeding, infection, a reaction to anesthesia, blood clots, breathing or lung problems, injury to nearby organs and a leak from the stomach’s staple line. Nausea and vomiting can also occur after bariatric procedures. Reflux symptoms may be a concern, and severe gastroesophageal reflux disease or Barrett esophagus are listed as relative contraindications in StatPearls. Longer-term care matters: ongoing medical, nutritional and behavioral follow-up supports weight management and helps clinicians assess problems such as inadequate weight loss or weight regain. Ask the surgeon to explain which risks apply to you, how complications are managed and which hospital or emergency service to contact after discharge.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery compared with other options

OptionHow it differs from gastric sleeve surgery
Gastric bypassBypass changes the route food takes through the digestive tract, whereas sleeve surgery removes part of the stomach without rerouting the intestines.
Adjustable gastric bandA band is placed around the upper stomach and can be adjusted or removed; sleeve surgery removes stomach tissue and is not reversible.
Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switchThis procedure combines a sleeve-like stomach reduction with intestinal rerouting and has different nutritional and follow-up considerations.
Nonsurgical medical weight managementThis may use nutrition, activity, behavioral support, and medication without an operation; suitability and expected results vary.

Getting gastric sleeve surgery in Mexico

When comparing treatment in Mexico, ask for the surgeon’s full name and verify board certification with the Consejo Mexicano de Cirugía General. Ask which hospital will perform the operation and what accreditation it holds. Request a written quote that identifies what is included, such as the surgeon, hospital stay, anesthesia, tests, medicines and follow-up, rather than relying on a headline price. Before booking, agree on a follow-up plan with the Mexico-based team and a clinician who can care for you at home. Discuss travel timing directly with your surgeon: general recovery may take two or three weeks, but that figure is not a personal clearance to fly. Get instructions for urgent care after returning home.

What the price usually includes

A Mexico package described as all-inclusive may cover the operation, facility and anesthesia fees, a hospital stay, routine preoperative testing, ground transportation, lodging, or postoperative checks. Inclusions vary, so request an itemized written list and clarify who provides care and how follow-up is handled.

Ask what is excluded, such as additional tests, treatment of complications, extra hospital or hotel nights, companion expenses, medications, flights, and care after returning home. Clarify whether the package covers emergency care or revision surgery, what happens if your procedure is postponed, and who pays for travel changes or an unplanned extended stay.

Travel and logistics

Plan travel only after the surgical team confirms the schedule and when it is appropriate to leave the area. Many patients arrange to stay near the facility for several days after surgery, but the required duration varies with the surgeon’s protocol and recovery. For Tijuana, travelers from San Diego may cross the border by vehicle or organized ground transport; confirm pickup, return arrangements, and current border requirements. Bring a valid passport or other accepted travel document and check official requirements before departure.

For flights, ask the surgeon when you may safely fly; do not assume that a fixed interval is suitable for everyone. Recent surgery and prolonged sitting can increase clot risk, so follow instructions about walking, hydration, compression, and prescribed preventive medication. A companion can help with transport and daily needs, and you should know how to contact the surgical team and obtain urgent care during the trip and after returning home.

Questions to ask before you book

  • What makes me a suitable candidate, and what health conditions could affect my risk?
  • Who will perform the operation, and what are their qualifications and experience with sleeve surgery?
  • What evaluations and test results are required before surgery?
  • What are the possible complications, including leak, bleeding, infection, blood clots, and reflux?
  • What is the exact diet and medication plan before and after surgery?
  • How long should I remain near the facility, and who decides when I can travel?
  • Who will provide follow-up, laboratory testing, and urgent care after I return home?
  • What services are included in writing, and what costs or travel changes could be excluded?
  • What is the plan if I have a complication or need additional treatment?

Long-term follow-up

Sleeve surgery requires ongoing follow-up, not just short-term recovery care. Your team may recommend regular visits and blood tests to check nutritional status and identify deficiencies or other concerns. Ask which vitamins or supplements you need, how long to take them, and how to monitor whether the plan is working; recommendations can differ by patient and program.

Before traveling, arrange a clinician at home who can receive your operative report and follow-up plan. Ask how the Mexico team will share records, who to contact with symptoms, and whether remote follow-up is available. Support groups or dietitian care may help with the long-term changes in eating and activity.

Dr. Green and His Staff Are EXCEPTIONAL!!! Dr. Green was exceptional. I am a year and four months out from my surgery and I am doing very well. When I went to Tijuana to have my Gastric Sleeve I was scared. My husband was my companion, but it was still scary going to an unknown place and having a surgery that was life changing. Dr. Green and his staff that coordinated everything was exceptional from the time we got off the plane and we escorted by the driver to our hotel until we left the hospital and went straight

Best Doctor Very happy I went with Dr. Verboonen. My coordinator kept in contact with me and helped facilitate everything going smoothly. We actually drove into Mexico and showed up the morning of my surgery. All of the doctors and nurses were so nice and caring. They took good care of me. A majority of the staff spoke very good English. The nurses anticipated anything I would need. They made the recovery after the sleeve much more manageable.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery in Mexico: frequently asked questions

How much does gastric sleeve surgery cost in Mexico?

Across 40 centers in this directory with a published price, listed starting prices range from $3,000 to $9,670, with a median of $4,525 (USD). Packages differ in what they include, such as hospital nights, tests, hotel and transport, so compare written quotes.

How much does gastric sleeve surgery cost in Mexico?

Prices vary by center and package. Compare the price table and ask each provider for a written breakdown of what is included.

How much of the stomach is removed?

About 75% to 80% of the stomach is removed, leaving a narrow sleeve.

Does gastric sleeve surgery bypass the intestines?

No. In sleeve gastrectomy, the stomach is reduced, but the intestines are not rerouted or bypassed.

Who may qualify for sleeve gastrectomy?

Common criteria include a BMI of 40 or higher, or 35 to 39.9 with a serious weight-related health problem. A clinician must assess each person’s eligibility.

How much weight do people typically lose?

A Cleveland Clinic guide reports 55% to 65% of excess body weight lost within 12 months for many patients. Results vary, and excess weight is not the same as total body weight.

When can I travel home after surgery?

There is no single travel date that is right for everyone. Discuss your itinerary and fitness to travel with your surgeon; general recovery estimates are not individual clearance.

Is gastric sleeve surgery reversible?

No. The removed portion of the stomach is not restored. If further treatment is needed, a surgeon may discuss other options, but these are additional procedures rather than reversal.

Can sleeve surgery affect heartburn or reflux?

Reflux may persist, improve, or worsen after surgery. Tell your surgeon about existing heartburn and ask how symptoms will be assessed and treated.

Will I need to change how I eat permanently?

The stomach’s reduced capacity means eating patterns typically change long term. Follow your care team’s guidance on meal size, pace, food texture, hydration, and nutrition.

When can I resume normal activities?

Activity is increased gradually, and timing depends on recovery and the type of activity. Your surgeon will advise when to return to work, exercise, and lifting.
