Gastric Bypass Surgery in Mexico is a major weight-loss operation, most often performed as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. It reduces the size of the stomach pouch and reroutes food through part of the small intestine. The operation may support substantial weight loss and improve some obesity-related health conditions, but results and risks vary. It requires long-term follow-up and attention to nutrition. Compare centers, clinics, surgeons, hospitals, and listed prices, then discuss whether surgery is appropriate for you with a qualified bariatric care team.

How it works
In Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, the surgeon divides the upper part of the stomach to create a small pouch. The pouch receives food and limits how much a person can eat at one time. The surgeon connects it to a section of the small intestine, so food bypasses most of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine. The bypassed stomach remains in the body and continues to produce digestive juices, which join food farther along the intestine. The procedure can be done laparoscopically, using small abdominal incisions. Reduced food intake and changes in nutrient absorption both contribute to weight loss.
Who it is for
Eligibility should be assessed individually by a bariatric clinician. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass may be an option for people with a BMI of 35 or higher, and for people with type 2 diabetes and a BMI of 30 or higher. Surgery may also be considered for people with a BMI of 30 to 34.9 who have not achieved substantial or lasting weight loss or improvement in related health conditions with nonsurgical methods. Other clinical guidance describes consideration at BMI above 40, or BMI 35 to 40 with conditions such as sleep apnea, high blood pressure, heart disease, or type 2 diabetes. A consultation is needed to assess health history and suitability.
Expected results
Weight loss is reported in different ways, so check whether a figure refers to excess body weight rather than total body weight. StatPearls reports that patients typically lose about 60% to 70% of excess body weight after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. A review reports an average of about 77% excess body weight loss at one year, while reported 10-year results ranged from 34% to 80.2%. These figures come from different studies and are not a personal prediction. Outcomes depend on the individual and on lifestyle changes after surgery. Gastric bypass may also improve obesity-related conditions, including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and reflux, but improvement is not guaranteed.
Recovery
Hospital stay and return to activity depend on the patient, surgical approach, and recovery. In one study of laparoscopic gastric bypass, the median hospital stay was two days and return to work averaged 21 days. Those results are not a timetable for every patient. The care team will give instructions about eating, activity, wound care, and follow-up after discharge. Because bypass surgery can reduce absorption of vitamins and minerals, ongoing nutritional care is important. Before traveling for surgery, ask the surgeon what recovery milestones must be met before travel and obtain individualized advice about when it is safe to resume normal activities or travel home.
Risks and complications
Gastric bypass has potential short- and long-term complications. Potential early risks include bleeding, a leak at a surgical connection, wound infection, blood clots, and narrowing of a connection. Later problems can include marginal ulcers, bowel obstruction, gallstones, and deficiencies of vitamins or other nutrients because absorption is reduced. Some complications may require further treatment or surgery. The procedure is typically not reversible, according to Mayo Clinic’s bariatric surgery information. Your personal risk depends on your health and operation, and should be discussed with the surgeon before deciding. Ask how complications are handled at the operating hospital and what care is available after you return home.
Getting gastric bypass surgery in Mexico
When comparing centers in Mexico, ask for the surgeon’s full name and verify their board certification with the Consejo Mexicano de Cirugía General. Ask which hospital will perform the operation and what accreditation it holds, then verify those details with the relevant organization. Request a written quote that itemizes what is included, such as the surgeon, hospital, anesthesia, tests, and follow-up; confirm any exclusions directly with the center. Before booking, arrange a follow-up plan with the surgical team and a clinician who can care for you at home. Ask the surgeon for individualized guidance on travel timing and what recovery criteria must be met before traveling. These checks help clarify arrangements; they do not guarantee a particular outcome.

Fantastic facility. Spent two days here with my uncle who had a gastric bypass. Staff was friendly. The procedure went well and the recovery suites are good and spacious. It's in a good, safe neighborhood on the business side of downtown. Lots of great restaurants in walking distance as well as the museum. You can't bring food into the building so the cafeteria and local restaurants are helpful.
HW: 246 CW: 240 SW: ? GW: 150 I am a 32 year old mom of 2, and I’m tired of being tired!! I have struggled with my weight since puberty, and I’ve easily lost and gained the same 40-50 pounds so many times I can’t keep track. I want to skydive! I also want to be healthy and live a long life with my kids. Both parents have high blood pressure, one diabetes and high cholesterol on top of that, and I want to get in front of those issues. I had planned to get RNY through my insurance,
I need to say 1st that this is how I perceived the events that took place . I am not a doctor. This is my opinion on how I seen things happen & the information that was given to me. I went with my family member on 11/17/24, as a companion, to Mexico bariatric in Tijuana, Mexico. Where she was to receive a gastric bypass procedure on 11/18/24. Unfortunately my family member did not return with me to Minnesota as planned. I want to start off with, what Mexico bariatric promises you is not true. They promise you all the staff are bilingual. Which is totally incorrect. I would say probably 2% of the hospital staff are bilingual. They promise…
On Point with Everything Renew Bariactrics is definitely recommend Dr. Green did my gastric bypass in may 2022 they had me check in with a nutritionist an answered any questions I had. They cleaned my open wounds every shift change, checked my drain, did my vitals and they was very kind to my sister as well.
This is my second surgery with hospital bc. After much research I decided to have my sleeve performed in 2022. Factors weighing into my decision were not just Dr. Illian’s credentials and pedigree, but also of the anesthesiologist, and the hospital itself. I read numerous reviews on google, Facebook groups, and Reddit and couldn’t not find a single negative thing anyone said about the hospital. When it was time for my sleeve i was pleased to find that not only were the reviews were accurate, but exceeded my expectations. When I made the choice to have a mini gastric bypass done, there was no other option in my mind than hospital bc and Dr. Illian. He treats patients as more…
