Gastric Sleeve Surgery in Mexico is one option people may consider when seeking surgical treatment for obesity. Also called sleeve gastrectomy, it removes most of the stomach, leaving a narrow tube that holds less food. The procedure can support weight loss and may improve some health problems related to excess weight, but it requires long-term follow-up and changes to eating habits. Review the procedure, expected results, recovery, risks and the details of any written quote with qualified health professionals before making a decision.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery hospitals, clinics and surgeons

How it works

A gastric sleeve, or sleeve gastrectomy, is an operation that removes about 75% to 80% of the stomach. The remaining portion is shaped into a narrow tube or sleeve. Because the smaller stomach holds less food, patients generally feel full after eating less. The operation may also reduce production of ghrelin, a hormone involved in appetite. Unlike gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy does not reroute or bypass the intestines. It is commonly performed laparoscopically, using a camera and instruments inserted through small abdominal incisions; robotic surgery may also be used. The removed portion of the stomach is not put back.

Who it is for

Common criteria for considering bariatric surgery include a BMI of 40 or higher, or a BMI of 35 to 39.9 with a serious weight-related health problem such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or severe sleep apnea. Some people with a BMI of 30 to 34 and serious weight-related health problems may qualify for certain weight-loss surgeries. Candidates have generally tried diet and exercise changes without sufficient weight loss. A clinical assessment is needed: suitability can also depend on overall health, ability to undergo anesthesia and other individual factors. The criteria are not a guarantee of eligibility, and a bariatric team can explain which options fit a patient’s circumstances.

Expected results

Weight loss varies from person to person. Cleveland Clinic’s bariatric guide says many sleeve patients lose 55% to 65% of their excess body weight within 12 months; some long-term data cited in that guide indicates that most maintain more than 50% excess weight loss after five years. StatPearls reports average excess weight loss of around 60% at five years. These figures refer to excess weight, not the same percentage of a person’s starting body weight. A separate Cleveland Clinic article says people commonly lose about one-third of their total body weight within eight to 12 months after bariatric surgery. Individual results depend on factors including starting weight and continued eating, activity and follow-up habits.

Recovery

Recovery time differs by patient and surgical team. A Cleveland Clinic article reports that patients commonly stay in hospital for one or two nights after bariatric surgery and that returning to normal life often takes about two or three weeks. These are general figures, not a personal timetable. Your surgeon should give you instructions about eating and drinking, medicines, wound care, activity and follow-up appointments. Ask the care team when you may resume specific activities and whether any symptoms need urgent attention. If you are travelling for surgery, arrange your return journey only after discussing recovery and travel timing with the surgeon who knows your case.

Risks and complications

Possible complications include bleeding, infection, a reaction to anesthesia, blood clots, breathing or lung problems, injury to nearby organs and a leak from the stomach’s staple line. Nausea and vomiting can also occur after bariatric procedures. Reflux symptoms may be a concern, and severe gastroesophageal reflux disease or Barrett esophagus are listed as relative contraindications in StatPearls. Longer-term care matters: ongoing medical, nutritional and behavioral follow-up supports weight management and helps clinicians assess problems such as inadequate weight loss or weight regain. Ask the surgeon to explain which risks apply to you, how complications are managed and which hospital or emergency service to contact after discharge.

Getting gastric sleeve surgery in Mexico

When comparing treatment in Mexico, ask for the surgeon’s full name and verify board certification with the Consejo Mexicano de Cirugía General. Ask which hospital will perform the operation and what accreditation it holds. Request a written quote that identifies what is included, such as the surgeon, hospital stay, anesthesia, tests, medicines and follow-up, rather than relying on a headline price. Before booking, agree on a follow-up plan with the Mexico-based team and a clinician who can care for you at home. Discuss travel timing directly with your surgeon: general recovery may take two or three weeks, but that figure is not a personal clearance to fly. Get instructions for urgent care after returning home.

So, I'm having the Vertical Sleeve in Tijuana, Mexico on October 2nd! I'm so excited, words can't describe it. I've struggled with weight all of my life. I did manage to lose about 60 pounds naturally by working out twice a day and basically eating eggs and soup and the occasional Slim Fast. Who can live off of that?! Anyway. I had lipo a few years ago, and let me tell you...it will come back unless you are mentally prepared to change your habits! I don't regret it tho...maybe

Rachel S. · Sleeve surgery Sep 2021

I started doing my research on the best doctors for weight loss surgery the beginning of 2021. I live in the US, but my research said Dr Ortiz & Dr. Martinez with OCC in Tijuana are the best. From the moment I contacted the clinic I was very well taken care of and my questions were always replied to and answered quickly. My sleeve surgery was 5/24/21. I travelled alone and was never afraid. Everyone was so kind and helpful; even at the Marriott. The first day after surgery was the hardest but even so it's been my easiest surgical recovery. After that first day i never felt like I had even had surgery. My starting weight was 225, my…

So after all this time and research I've finally purchased my plane ticket and paid the $500 deposit. I'm getting sleeved! I decided to go with BariatricPal and get Dr. Ponceto the surgery. Deciding on Dr Ponce was easier thN finding the right coordinator, David from BariatricPal was perfect. I can't wait to see how my trip goes. I go under the knife on the 15th April 2015. I'm honestly so anxious, I'm tired of being fat and immobile. There aren't too many men on these sites

My story starts like many others. I grew up chubby, did my teens with a little something extra, got hitched in 2010 with the much needed help of spanx and a tightly corseted dress and moved blissfully into marriage with a burger in my hand. A big personality can help you a lot, it can also give the impression of confidence where it lacks. I have never felt comfortable in my own skin, but showing that weakness and sadness and being vocal in my struggle was not something I felt
